Roastin', Toastin', Boastin'

Or not.

For Christmas, incredibly patient husband and I decided to buy ourselves a coffee roaster. We had been hearing from more and more people how wonderful the coffee would taste and how fun it would be to try different coffees from around the world. Sounded like a fun hobby for two people who like good coffee.

Well, we've had the roaster for a month. So far, I'd give the coffees we've tried maybe a C+, B- max. So what's the deal? We always used Gevalia Light Roast coffee before, so we aren't comparing this stuff to Folgers, and maybe that's part of the problem. But I've had coffees that have had a flavor I've really enjoyed at a few places I wouldn't consider five star. Like LaMadelaine's French roast. (And this gal always thought she only liked light roasts!) Even at Applebee's the other day when the restaurant was FREEZING, I ordered a cuppa joe and it was quite nice. Tasty. Yummy even.

The best we've done here is make a decaf that actually didn't taste too much like decaf. So maybe I just haven't found the right beans yet. Perhaps I need to try some obscure East Timorese bean. If you experienced roasters have any suggestions, please let me know.

Meanwhile, I'll just sip on this nice, but not magnificent, java.

Hey, GramCrackers, thanks for posting on my blog. I guess you've slipped under my radar, this is the first time I've visited yours. Do we know each other?

Talk to Mike about the coffee beans. Maybe he can tell you which kinds to buy or how long to roast or whatever. My favorites as far as flavor are the peaberries. Another roaster friend at CBC says he always mixes his fresh-roasted beans when he brews a pot. Makes a better brew.

I don't think we've ever met. We go to CBC, so maybe we've passed each other without knowing it.

I'll ask Mike about the coffee. We do have a pack of peaberries, so I'll try that one next. (We got a sample pack from Sweet Marie's.)Thank you!

If you want to try some other beans let me know...there are some beans that do NOT task good in a drip roast coffee maker. It's a learning thing. Give me a call, or contact Elmo Flory, the guy that got all of this going, and either of us will help...It does get really fun once you figure this out.

Okie, my two cents (although I'm not a coffee drinker)...is what i overheard at a coffee shop. They were asked a similar question. It seems the roasted beans are only part of the equation.

THe water must reach a higher temperature than most of the coffee makers on the market for flavor to rival starbucks.

I don't know but when my brother in law heard this news, he researched, found a coffee machine that had higher temps for the water and he loves the flavor now.

If you want to get technical, the water you use makes a huge difference, too. We use filtered water. And the best cup of coffee comes from a french press rather than a coffeemaker. But we usually use a coffeemaker.

Thanks for all your help. I still need to talk to Mike.

We have a Capresso coffee maker...set the time and it grinds the beans and brews the coffee so it's ready when we are. But I don't know how hot it makes the water. I'll have to check on that. The water goes through a 3-step filter, so that should be ok. I'm looking forward to trying the peaberries.

Thanks to all of you who gave us ideas!
